What's so special about the materials used to make our seat covers?

The majority of seat covers you will find elsewhere are made from 210D Nylon with a PVC backing. This is actually a very lightweight nylon, glued to a thick PVC backing to give an effective, if rather crude, waterproof coating. The material can delaminate to leave just the thin, easily damaged Nylon as the seat covering.

Our seat covers use 600 denier Polyester that couples well to a waterproof Polyurethane coating. Generally referred to 600D/PU, this material has a great reputation for toughness and durability, together with being waterproof to a hydrostatic head of 600mm and having excellent UV resistance. This material is widely used in backpacks, soft luggage and sports goods.

There are many benefits to 600D/PU over 210/PVC. The first obvious advantage is that the 600D/PU is softer to the touch and allows air to circulate more freely which in turn reduces sweating by the seat occupant even in strong sunlight. The second big benefit is its strength and toughness. On coated fabrics, all their strength comes from the material: the coating simply coats the fabric with a water resistant backing. If one were to strip the backing off the two materials, the 600D polyester would be a much stronger and tougher matrix. This helps in resistance to tearing and scuffing. Other benefits are that it has a better hand-feel, smarter looking fabric, less shiny looking. It is now widely accepted that the covers from Town and Country are the smartest and most hard wearing available today.
